Sculptra Treatment

What is Sculptra?

Sculptra works differently than traditional filling agents, like fat or dermal fillers. It contains poly-L-lactic acid (PLLA), a biocompatible and biodegradable material that stimulates your body’s collagen production, thickening the soft tissues of the face, adding contours or retexturing the skin’s upper layers.

How does Sculptra work?

Sculptra works differently than traditional fillers. Instead of directly filling in wrinkles and folds, it stimulates your body’s own natural collagen production.

Here’s how it works:

  • Injection: Sculptra is injected into the deep dermis, the layer of skin responsible for structure and support, or deeper into the soft underlying tissues to give undermining structural support.
  • Collagen Stimulation: The poly-L-lactic acid (PLLA) in Sculptra acts as a bio-activator, triggering your body to produce new collagen fibers.
  • Gradual Improvement: The new collagen gradually builds up over time, restoring lost volume and improving skin texture and firmness.

This process takes time, and results typically become noticeable within a few weeks to months after your initial treatment. For optimal results, a series of treatments spaced several weeks apart is usually recommended.

Because Sculptra stimulates collagen production, the results look natural and can last significantly longer than traditional dermal filler agents or skin booster products.

It’s important to note that Sculptra is not a quick fix. It requires a commitment to a treatment plan and patience to see the full results. However, the long-lasting, natural-looking improvement makes Sculptra a worthwhile investment for many people seeking to restore a fresher, firmer and lifted appearance.

Since 1999, Sculptra has been used by thousands of patients in more than 300 countries, primarily for cosmetic purposes. In Australia, It is approved for aesthetic medicine and reconstructive use.

What areas can be treated with Sculptra?

  • Restore lost or sunken facial volume to cheeks and mid-face
  • Defines and lifts the jawline angle and improves jowling
  • Chest wrinkles or sleep lines

  • Corrects contour deficiencies, giving the overall appearance of facial lifting
  • It improves skin creases, facial lines, and wrinkles and lifts facial folds

How did Sculptra come about?

Sculptra® has been around for over 25 years. Its initial use in general medicine revolutionised the management of patients with fat and collagen loss and facial volume-depleting medical conditions as an alternative to fat transplant. By the early 2000s, Sculptra had found its way into Aesthetic medicine worldwide as an injectable treatment. Our senior Registered Nurse, Vicki Hull, was one of the first Australian clinicians who also worked in the field as a Clinical Trainer to implement Sculptra into her clinical practice.

Is Sculptra better than treatments that fill, lift & improve skin texture?

Sculptra and traditional fillers can help address signs of aging, but they work differently and offer distinct benefits. Deciding which is ‘better’ or the right treatment can depend on several factors, such as your skin ageing, severity of skin laxity and other lifestyle influences that may impact poor treatment outcomes. Your individual needs and desired results will be comprehensively assessed and discussed during your consultation with one of our well-versed, Sculptra-trained Registered Nurses.

Here’s a comparison to help you understand the key differences:

Traditional Filling Agents:

  • Immediate results: Filling products provide instant volume and wrinkle correction.
  • Targeted correction: Ideal for specific areas like nasolabial folds or lips.
  • Shorter-lasting results Typically last 6-12 months, depending on the type of filling or collagen-stimulating agent used.

Sculptra:

  • Gradual results: Stimulates collagen production for a more natural-looking and subtle improvement over time.
  • Overall improvement: Enhances skin texture and addresses volume loss across a wider area.
  • Longer-lasting results: Can last up to 2 years or more.

Sculptra may be a better choice if you:

  • Want natural-looking results: Sculptra’s gradual collagen stimulation creates a subtle, natural-looking improvement, avoiding the ‘overfilled’ appearance sometimes associated with filling products.
  • Seek long-lasting results: Sculptra’s results can last significantly longer than traditional skin-boosting filler agents, reducing the need for frequent touch-up treatments.
  • Desire overall skin and contour restorative improvement: Sculptra addresses volume loss and improves skin texture and firmness. Its dual capabilities make Sculptra unique.

Ultimately, your best choice depends on your needs and goals. Consulting with a Registered Nurse at The Cosmetic Studio Noosa can help you determine whether Sculptra or a traditional filler is the right option for you.

Is Sculptra Right for Me?

Sculptra can be a realistic option for many people seeking to improve their skin and facial appearance, but it’s not for everyone. Here are some factors to consider:

Sculptra may be a good choice for you if:

  • You are experiencing volume loss in your face, such as sunken cheeks or temples.
  • You have wrinkles and folds that you want to improve.
  • You desire a natural-looking improvement in your skin’s texture and firmness.
  • You are willing to commit to a treatment plan and wait for gradual results.

Sculptra may not be suitable for you if:

  • You have active skin infections or inflammation.
  • You are pregnant or breastfeeding.
  • You have certain autoimmune diseases.
  • You are looking for immediate results.
  • You have several skin or neck laxity.
  • You have severe skin damage from smoking or sunbaking.

It’s important to consult a Registered Nurse to determine if Sculptra is the right treatment. During your consultation, we will discuss your individual needs and goals, assess your skin, and answer any questions you may have.

At The Cosmetic Studio Noosa, we are committed to providing our clients with personalised care and helping them achieve their desired results. We will work with you to develop a treatment plan tailored to your needs and ensure your safety and satisfaction.

How much does Sculptra cost?

We offer consultations and assessments with our registered Nurses to determine how many repeat treatments you may require to achieve an optimal result. Sculptra comes in a powdered single vial unit that is reconstituted. As a rule, those with minimal skin aging or volume loss may require one treatment session, whereas others may require several sessions.

One Sculptra vial costs $850.

We offer treatment plans and packages, allowing our clients to pay as they go.

Frequently Asked Questions

Although we follow strict guidelines and take every precaution with your treatment, any injection into the skin can carry risks and side effects. Common injection-related reactions with Sculptra include swelling, bleeding leading to bruising, redness or itchiness, tenderness at the site and lumps and bumps. These side effects typically resolve within a few days; however, bruising and swelling can last anywhere from 3 to 14 days in some individuals.

Other rarely reported adverse events include injection site abscess, allergic reaction, exaggerated collagen and tissue elasticity augmentation, malaise, fatigue and swelling, granulomas or blockage of blood vessels causing necrosis, or exceedingly rare events of blindness.

At The Cosmetic Studio Noosa our staff are regularly trained in emergency responses in the management of all adverse events in accordance to the ‘Guidelines on Emergency Responses to Adverse Events’. We abide by safe injecting practices and adhere to strict protocols for medical management to resolve these conditions in the rare event of them occurring.

At your first consultation and every 12 months, you will have a Facetime Consultation with one of our supervising medical prescribers, who will assess your medical history, current medications, and any allergies or illnesses that may affect your suitability for treatment with Sculptra.

NB: Recent changes to dilutions, attendance to anatomical workshop with adverse event recognition training have markedly reduced the incidence of these severe but rare complications.

Sculptra is known for its long-lasting results, typically lasting up to 2 years or more. This is significantly longer than most traditional fillers, which often need to be repeated every 6-18 months.

However, it’s important to note that individual results may vary depending on several factors, including:

  • Age and skin condition: Younger skin with good collagen production may see longer-lasting results.
  • Severity of volume loss: More severe volume loss may require additional treatments to achieve desired results.
  • Individual metabolism: The rate at which your body metabolises the PLLA in Sculptra can affect how long the results last.
  • Lifestyle factors: Sun exposure, smoking, and poor nutrition can accelerate collagen breakdown and shorten the duration of results.

Following a healthy lifestyle and good skincare routine can help prolong the results of your Sculptra treatment. Additionally, touch-up treatments can be performed to maintain optimal results over time.

During your consultation at The Cosmetic Studio Noosa, we can discuss your circumstances and provide a more personalised estimate of how long Sculptra may last.

When Sculptra wears off, your skin will gradually return to its pre-treatment state. This means that the volume and lift achieved with Sculptra will diminish, and wrinkles and folds may become more noticeable again.

However, it’s important to remember that Sculptra works by stimulating your own collagen production. Even after the PLLA in Sculptra has been metabolised by your body, the increased collagen production can continue to provide some improvement in skin texture and firmness for a period of time.

Additionally, Sculptra can help slow the aging process by promoting ongoing collagen production. So, even though your skin may not look exactly the same as it did immediately after your Sculptra treatment, it will likely still look better than it would have without any treatment at all.

Your pain tolerance or fear of needles are comprehensively covered in your consultation. We offer many types of pain relief, from potent prescribed anaesthetic numbing cream, ice packs and proven distraction techniques! Best of all, Sculptra is made up of a local anaesthetic, which numbs the area once injected with a needle (sharp) or cannula (blunt).

  • At your consultation, we take your health history and other relevant information discussed, including consent, risks and benefits, then provide you with written Before & Aftercare instructions.
  • A comprehensive facial assessment is conducted, and your treatment plan is given.
  • Sculptra is not classified as a prescription medicine, but the topical anaesthetic numbing cream is, so we obtain a 12-month script from our Prescriber via videoconference.
  • All your makeup is removed. Then, an anaesthetic cream is applied to the areas to be treated and allowed to penetrate for approximately 30 minutes.
  • The anaesthetic cream is removed, and the skin is cleansed with an antiseptic solution.
  • Sculptra is injected in small amounts into the areas mapped out using either a fine needle (sharp) or cannula (blunt), and multiple injections are given as required.
  • Cryo-ice therapy is used throughout for added comfort and can be applied to help reduce bruising and swelling.
  • After the treatment session, the area will be massaged to distribute the product evenly.
  • The treatment session usually takes 45 minutes to complete.
  • Before leaving, we go over Aftercare and provide you with a home care information sheet
