What is Sculptra?
Sculptra works differently than traditional filling agents, like fat or dermal fillers. It contains poly-L-lactic acid (PLLA), a biocompatible and biodegradable material that stimulates your body’s collagen production, thickening the soft tissues of the face, adding contours or retexturing the skin’s upper layers.
How does Sculptra work?
Sculptra works differently than traditional fillers. Instead of directly filling in wrinkles and folds, it stimulates your body’s own natural collagen production.
Here’s how it works:
- Injection: Sculptra is injected into the deep dermis, the layer of skin responsible for structure and support, or deeper into the soft underlying tissues to give undermining structural support.
- Collagen Stimulation: The poly-L-lactic acid (PLLA) in Sculptra acts as a bio-activator, triggering your body to produce new collagen fibers.
- Gradual Improvement: The new collagen gradually builds up over time, restoring lost volume and improving skin texture and firmness.
This process takes time, and results typically become noticeable within a few weeks to months after your initial treatment. For optimal results, a series of treatments spaced several weeks apart is usually recommended.
Because Sculptra stimulates collagen production, the results look natural and can last significantly longer than traditional dermal filler agents or skin booster products.
It’s important to note that Sculptra is not a quick fix. It requires a commitment to a treatment plan and patience to see the full results. However, the long-lasting, natural-looking improvement makes Sculptra a worthwhile investment for many people seeking to restore a fresher, firmer and lifted appearance.
Since 1999, Sculptra has been used by thousands of patients in more than 300 countries, primarily for cosmetic purposes. In Australia, It is approved for aesthetic medicine and reconstructive use.
What areas can be treated with Sculptra?
How did Sculptra come about?
Sculptra® has been around for over 25 years. Its initial use in general medicine revolutionised the management of patients with fat and collagen loss and facial volume-depleting medical conditions as an alternative to fat transplant. By the early 2000s, Sculptra had found its way into Aesthetic medicine worldwide as an injectable treatment. Our senior Registered Nurse, Vicki Hull, was one of the first Australian clinicians who also worked in the field as a Clinical Trainer to implement Sculptra into her clinical practice.

Is Sculptra better than treatments that fill, lift & improve skin texture?
Sculptra and traditional fillers can help address signs of aging, but they work differently and offer distinct benefits. Deciding which is ‘better’ or the right treatment can depend on several factors, such as your skin ageing, severity of skin laxity and other lifestyle influences that may impact poor treatment outcomes. Your individual needs and desired results will be comprehensively assessed and discussed during your consultation with one of our well-versed, Sculptra-trained Registered Nurses.
Here’s a comparison to help you understand the key differences:
Traditional Filling Agents:
- Immediate results: Filling products provide instant volume and wrinkle correction.
- Targeted correction: Ideal for specific areas like nasolabial folds or lips.
- Shorter-lasting results Typically last 6-12 months, depending on the type of filling or collagen-stimulating agent used.
Sculptra:
- Gradual results: Stimulates collagen production for a more natural-looking and subtle improvement over time.
- Overall improvement: Enhances skin texture and addresses volume loss across a wider area.
- Longer-lasting results: Can last up to 2 years or more.
Sculptra may be a better choice if you:
- Want natural-looking results: Sculptra’s gradual collagen stimulation creates a subtle, natural-looking improvement, avoiding the ‘overfilled’ appearance sometimes associated with filling products.
- Seek long-lasting results: Sculptra’s results can last significantly longer than traditional skin-boosting filler agents, reducing the need for frequent touch-up treatments.
- Desire overall skin and contour restorative improvement: Sculptra addresses volume loss and improves skin texture and firmness. Its dual capabilities make Sculptra unique.
Ultimately, your best choice depends on your needs and goals. Consulting with a Registered Nurse at The Cosmetic Studio Noosa can help you determine whether Sculptra or a traditional filler is the right option for you.
