What causes lines?
There are many reasons why we develop lines and wrinkles on our face. Some causes are genetic and some are environmental. However, the primary reason is due to the way our muscles move in our face. Repetitive facial expressions are the main cause of wrinkles. A common example of this is if you are a typical ‘squinter’, meaning you may be prone to develop crow’s feet lines around your eyes. Likewise, if you are a ‘frowner’ you may start to form frown lines in between your eyebrows. Often people with very expressive faces will develop facial lines
The following areas can be improved with Anti-Wrinkle Injections:
- Vertical ‘frown lines’ between the eyebrows
- Horizontal forehead (‘surprise’) lines
- The ‘crow’s feet’ at the sides of the eyes
- Lines under the eyes
- ‘Bunny scrunches’ on the upper nose
- Vertical neck lines
- Smoker’s / upper lip lines
- Corners of the mouth
- Refining bulky jawlines
- ‘Gummy smile’ from upper lip
Our Skin relaxing treatment
Over the past 20 years we have developed highly effective techniques to treat and prevent unwanted wrinkles. By relaxing the muscles responsible for these lines we can improve or completely eliminate them depending on the severity. Our highly experienced and trained clinicians are skilled in facial assessment and will formulate an individual treatment plan according to your needs.
Maintain your youth
We have observed in long term clinical studies that around two thirds of people who have regular 3-4 monthly injections eventually require less frequent repeat injections and sometimes even smaller doses. This is thought to be the result of muscle weakening and muscle re-training. Both of these phenomena are considered a desired effect. The advantage of slowing the progression of lines and wrinkles is achieving a more youthful appearance, while still being able to form normal expressions. So you’ll still look like you, just a fresher more youthful version!
Frequently Asked Questions
ARE ANTI-WRINKLE INJECTIONS RIGHT FOR ME?
Anti-Wrinkle Injections are muscle relaxant drugs and are given in safe, small, therapeutic doses for Cosmetic injections. If you are pregnant, planning on becoming pregnant, breastfeeding or suffering from a nerve or muscle disease such as Eaton-Lambert Syndrome, Myasthenia Gravis or Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS) you cannot have Anti-Wrinkle Injections. As with any treatment you are about to commence, it is important to discuss your health history with your practitioner to determine whether you are suitable. Apart from these conditions most people are suitable for Anti-Wrinkle treatment.
HOW EXACTLY DO ANTI-WRINKLE INJECTIONS WORK?
Anti-wrinkle injections are given in small quantities to specific muscles of the face to reduce the contraction movement that cause lines and wrinkles to form in the skin overlaying the muscle. Anti-wrinkle injections work by reducing or blocking the secretion of a chemical acetylcholine, which is a neurotransmitter or chemical messenger in the brain. These chemical messengers normally allow the nerve impulses to travel along the nerve pathway to facial muscles, making the muscles contract. When injected into the muscle the Botulinum protein attaches to the nerve endings and blocks the signal transmission to target muscles, causing relaxation, which gives a smooth, fresh and youthful appearance.
ARE THERE ANY SIDE EFFECTS AND WHAT WILL I LOOK LIKE IMMEDIATELY AFTER MY TREATMENT?
Like other injectable treatments, Botulinum Injections can have side effects, but these are mild and temporary. This may include any pain felt from the tiny injections, which is likened to a minor scratchy sensation. The injected area may be slightly puffy and red immediately after treatment, but generally recovers literally within minutes. Sometimes bruising can occur at the injection site, this typically resolves within a few days and can be easily covered using mineral make-up. A mild headache after treatment may be experienced by 9% of first time users but this is a side effect that generally resolves within 24 hours. Less than 3% of people report generalised ‘flu-like’ symptoms during the onset phase, this quickly resolves within a day or two.
In very rare cases muscle weakness such as drooping of the eyelids or eyebrows can occur. This is not a side effect as such, rather dosing and placement related, usually at forehead or frown muscles. Our medical experts at the Cosmetic Studio Noosa take every precaution necessary to reduce the risk of this occurring when they administer anti-wrinkle treatments. If in the very rare event that this unwanted side effect occurs it is important to know it is not permanent and will usually resolve within a few weeks.
Anti-wrinkle injections take approximately 2-7 days to take effect; so there won’t be any immediate change in your facial appearance. You can carry on with your normal daily activities afterwards, however it is important to keep in mind that during the onset phase (2-7 days) you can inadvertently disrupt the spread of the dosing and the treatment outcome by applying undue pressure to the treatment area. We suggest you do not wear swimming goggles if your eye area has been treated, refrain from heavily massaging the injected area when cleansing or moisturising, do not wear tight fitting caps or hats over forehead area and do not have a facial or a massage in the first few days following treatment. It is important to follow these aftercare instructions to reduce the risk of unwanted side effects.
WHAT HAPPENS DURING AND HOW LONG DOES THE PROCEDURE TAKE?
The procedure itself takes approximately 5-10 minutes. However, at The Cosmetic Studio Noosa, we allow 45 minutes for consultation time to discuss your medical history, the results you would like to achieve and all information related to the treatment. We tailor a personalised treatment plan for you and take time to answer whatever questions or concerns you may have. As part of the treatment process we take photos of the area, (strictly for your and our digital records only), and obtain your consent. Before you leave we give you brochures, information on after care with a follow-up appointment to review the treatment if it is your first time having this treatment.
HOW MUCH WILL THE TREATMENT COST?
At The Cosmetic Studio Noosa anti-wrinkle injections are priced per unit (a dosage), therefore cost depends on how much is needed in units to achieve the desired result. As well, different treatment areas require different dosing and the dose required for each individual may vary. Some people have a very deep, strong frowning muscle for example while other’s have a weaker, smaller frowning complex – so the dose (how many units needed) and the cost can vary*.
Because muscle contraction and movement is different in each person we have to actually see the area to assess and determine dosing and therefore cost. To do this we are required to perform the assessment face-to-face in the consultation, rather than over the phone. As mentioned earlier, the consultation is free and is a great opportunity to discuss all the options available and give you an accurate quote.
*A starting dose for a smaller frown or eye wrinkles can start at $120 up to $280 to relax the same areas for a very strong muscle contraction. We charge $4 per unit for our D Brand of Anti-wrinkle injection. Refer to our PRICES page for more information on other areas.
HOW QUICKLY WILL YOU SEE RESULTS?
Results vary from person to person but you will be able to see the effects of the treatment within a week. In most cases, you will begin to notice the treated area slowly relax the muscles in the first 3-4 days. For some the onset is quick and for others it is slower. Because Botulinum Toxin is a muscle relaxant, (commonly used medically to ease spastic muscle conditions like Cerebral Palsy), you will not feel pain or discomfort, rather it has the sensation of relaxation, which is the opposite to a cramping feeling. In fact, when this treatment is given in the frown or forehead area it can often improve muscle tension and headaches.
WILL I BRUISE?
There are chances of bruising with any treatment that involves any injection. We take every step to minimise bruising, however bruising risks can be reduced and we discuss these at the consultation. It is important to note that medications and supplements like Nurofen, Fish Oil, Aspirin, GinkoBilba and Vitamin E affect can thin your blood thereby increasing the chances of bruising. Please let your practitioner know what medications you are taking prior to your treatment. However, do not discontinue medication without consulting with your doctor first.
WILL IT HURT?
At The Cosmetic Studio Noosa, it is our priority to ensure that our clients feel at ease and are comfortable while undergoing their treatments. In most cases, you will not need any pain relief for Anti-wrinkle injections, which are likened to a tiny scratching sensation. For those who are highly anxious or have a needle phobia, we use a topical anesthetic cream prior to the treatment to dull the sensation further and employ an array of effective distracting techniques. Making clients feel comfortable and confident whilst under our care is part of our expertise.
WHY DO YOU NEED A REVIEW APPOINTMENT?
It is necessary for us to follow up on patients who undergo our anti-wrinkle injection treatments to assess that the dose used has given the desired result. More times than not the treatment has worked as expected but very occasionally it may need adjusting with additional dosing to achieve full relaxation. At The Cosmetic Studio Noosa we do not charge for dosing top-ups at the review appointment. Because anti-wrinkle treatments do not work immediately we suggest you return approximately two weeks after the treatment so we can assess your post-treatment progress. This session is conducted free of charge and takes only a few minutes.
WHAT IS A UNIT?
A unit is the form of measurement used to measure anti-wrinkle medication i.e. the dose. All facial muscles have a sliding scale of how many units are to be used to relax movement. The scale can start at a very small number of units for a small contraction to a large number of units for very strong movement. How many units you will have depends on the strength of the contraction or how smooth and relaxed you want that area to be. For example, if you have a strong frown but only want it softened slightly the dose can be calculated in lesser unit amounts to give you the desired result. Likewise, if you have a strong frown and prefer it to be completely relaxed the units can be increased within the sliding scale to achieve maximum relaxation.
WHAT IS A STATIC WRINKLE?
Static wrinkles are lines that form because the skin’s scaffolding holding structures, (collagen & elastin fibers) are no longer able to support the tissue and as a result lines begin to develop. These weaknesses can develop further into deeper creases or folds as the skin looses its elasticity. Static lines appear as a normal part of facial ageing, however some people experience premature facial ageing if collagen stores have been adversely affected, causing collagen destruction from smoking, drug taking, sun baking, menopause, illnesses and stress. Another form of static line that appears as we age are sleep lines and creases. Generally speaking static lines and wrinkles are treated with Dermal Fillers, which lift, fill, hydrate and restore collagen. (For more on fillers go to our Dermal Filler page).
WHAT IS A DYNAMIC WRINKLE?
Dynamic wrinkles are lines that form from repetitive facial muscle movement. For example, people who work outdoors and squint or frown a lot will often develop crinkles around their eyes or frown lines in between their brows. In other cases there is a genetic propensity to frowning or smiling strongly, which develops familial lines and wrinkles. Regardless of the cause, all dynamic lines are treated with Anti-Wrinkle Injections which relax the over active muscles in question. This in turn smooths the skin over laying the muscle creating a softer more youthful appearance.
WHAT CAUSES WRINKLES?
There are many factors that contribute to development of wrinkles in the human face other than normal facial ageing. Family genetics, some hereditary conditions, poor health, stressors, environmental influences and some lifestyle choices all play a role in the premature onset, development and severity of wrinkles. Discussing your health, lifestyle and family history is an essential part of the treatment plan process to determine the best course of treatment for wrinkles, whether dynamic or static.
WHAT BRAND OF ANTI-WRINKLE MEDICATION DOES THE COSMETIC STUDIO USE AND WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE?
There are two major brands of Anti-Wrinkle medications used in Australia. Due to legislation we are not permitted to name or advertise them by their brand names as they are classified as Schedule 4 type drugs. Hence, muscle relaxants are referred to in the industry as ‘Anti-Wrinkle Injections’. Both brands, “D” brand and “B” brand use a patent formula with ‘Botulinum Toxin Type A’ as the main ingredient. There are some differences in packaging between brands however the end result of treatments with either brand will be essentially the same. For instance, Panadol or Panamex are both pain relievers using the same ingredient of Paracetamol and giving similar results. Only their brand name and packaging is different. At the Cosmetic Studio Noosa we choose “D” brand.
WHEN SHOULD I START HAVING ANTI-WRINKLE INJECTIONS?
Most people are not sure when they should start undergoing anti-wrinkle treatments. We recommend coming in for an assessment and consultation if you are noticing unwanted lines, wrinkles and movement starting to appear. Options can be discussed and a treatment plan of action can be formulated.
HOW LONG DO THE RESULTS LAST?
Generally the muscle relaxing effect lasts between 2-4 months. Some people will notice after several treatments that the muscle strength has naturally weakened from being kept in a state of relaxation – especially for the frown area. This is a desired effect and can lead to longer spacing between treatment sessions and hence reduced cost!
WHAT HAPPENS WHEN YOUR RESULTS WEAR OFF?
When your anti-wrinkle treatment wears off, the treated muscles will simply regain their prior strength and normal movement will be restored to the treated area by 3-4 months. The lines and wrinkles will also gradually return, so it is recommended that you return within a fortnight of them reappearing for a top-up.
